Les Illes Balears tenen una llarga història de episodis de precipitacions intenses, que produeixen inundacions de tant en tant. Les condicions litològiques i geomorfològiques, juntament amb la intervenció humana, fan que els sistemes de drenatge tinguin un funcionament tan sols esporàdic. D'altra banda, la torrencialitat de les precipitacions es notoria, amb un màxim registrat de 536,5 mm en 24 hores (Escorca, 22 d'octubre de 1959), i episodis històrics d'inundacions amb milers de victimes (Palma, 14 d'octubre de 1403). Actualment, els riscs d'inundacions han augmentat degut a actuacions urbanístiques negligents, induïdes per la pressió de la indústria turística, i el canvi climàtic obre una incerta perspectiva de possible increment de la intensitat de les precipitacions. ; The Balearic Islands have a long history of heavy precipitation events, causing floods from time to time. Natural drainage systems have a sporadic functionality, due to lithological and geomorphological conditions, and human intervention. On the other side, the torrentiality of the precipitations is notorious, with a registered maximum in 24 hours of 536.5 mrn (Escorca, October the 22"', 1959), and historical flood events with thousands of victims (Palma, October the 14", 1403). Nowadays, flood hazard has raised due to negligent building procedures, induced by the pressure of the tourism industry, and climatic change opens an uncertain future of possible increased precipitation intensity. |
