; Asplenium balearicum was collected for the first time in Sardinia by PICHI SERMOLLI in 1970, butils presence on the island was recorded by him in 1986 only. Thefem occurs in the northern partof Sardin ia, in Gallura, in the zone of Naracunieddu and it dwells among the debris of the basic intrusive rocks of narrow late-Hercynian dyke, about one metre wide, rising from the granite for some metres only. This is the sole locality in which the fern is known to occur in Sardinia. The climatic conditions of the zone are outlined, and detailed information is given on the characteristic, chiefly physical, of the soil of the dyke. After a description of the vegetation of the locality, particular attention is paid to the plant community which grows on the dyke. In addition toA. balearicum, its parents,A. obovatum andA. onopterls, and an unidentified hybrid of it occur there. The results of a careful study of the field of variability of the specimens ofA. balearicum are given and the importance and the significance of the presence of its parents in the same station are emphasized. Information on A. balearicum in general is added. Its geographical distribution is carefully established and the pedological characteristics of the Italian and Balearic stations in which it is present are sketched. The polymorphism ofA. balearicum is studied and the variability of some characteristics are shown in a table (tab. 1) with comments, and the conclusion is reached that it is mainly due to the increase in age and maturity. Finally the geographical distribution ofA. balearicum, its parents and the diploid hybrid (A. x bouharmontiù, from which il originated, is established (tab. 2). The comparison of the occurrence of them in the various islands, as well as the morphological characteristics which the species shows in the Italian and Balearic localities, lead us to believe thal in Sardinia and in the islands of Capraia, Ponza, Palmarola and Pantelleria A. balearicum is recent in origin, while in Menorca it probably is to be considered as a relict.
