Uno de los grandes retos medio ambientales peruanos es la conservación costera, para un país eminentemente marítimo que cuenta en su inventario de recursos naturales con 3,080 km. de costa, localizado estratégicamente al centro de Sudamerica y con la importancia de contar en su mar con la corriente peruana de Humboldt, que convierte sus ecosistemas marinos en uno de los mas ricos en biodiversidad del planeta; el Perú carga con la enorme responsabilidad mundial de hacer un uso sostenible de sus recursos marinos. La costa peruana con sus 700 playas y ecosistemas diversos al norte, centro y sur tiene el 65% de la población del país que habita en las más grandes ciudades del país localizadas en el litoral; esto provoca que el mayor atractivo turístico intemo lo constituyan las playas, ellas son receptoras del más manido y habitual recurso de las masas poblacionales: El día de playa. La organización ECOPLAYAS, con quince años de actividades en beneficio de los ecosistemas costeros del Perú, ha desarrollado investigación, mas de cien operativos de limpieza de playas y charlas para concientizar a la población hacia la adecuada eliminación de sus desechos en las riberas de costa. Este conocimiento de manejo costero devino en la creación del Premio Ecoplayas Perú@ con el objetivo de concienciar y educar a los responsables de ecosistemas playeros hacia la conservación y uso sostenible, creando un reflejo educativo e identificación de orgullo por el cuidado de sus playas entre la población.
